Student Experiences EMC

“The most challenging part of the Program was not as much the courses but all things around it: Living out of a suitcase for 6 months, Working and having fun with 16 other students, Contact with the industry, Excursions, Language barriers, etc. I have learnt a lot this year both academically and socially”

-Volkert de Ruiter, TU Delft -

“The EMC has been an amazing journey.  This course not only challenges you at an academic level; it also challenges you with living in different countries and working with people from many cultures.  The classes are intensive and the lifestyle is fast paced.  I have learnt many things about the mining industry in the past year.  I have also seen many countries and cities throughout Europe and visited some amazing mines along the way. The real value of EMC is not only the technical knowledge you gain, but the personal development you make, the intra-cultural skills you build and the contacts and friends you find, all during one hectic, incredible, demanding, enjoyable year.  I highly recommend the EMC to anyone who wants a challenge and really wants to experience a truly unique programme.”

 -Nick Russell – EMMEP (Australia)-

“The EMC has been a great experience both academically and socially. It has enabled me to meet many different people with diverse backgrounds and learn about their ways of life. I particularly liked the fact that we were based in four different countries, and enjoyed the challenge of adapting to everyday life in each while living out of a suitcase. The EMC also provided me with the experience of some great and varied excursions. I would definitely recommend the programme and am glad that I have participated in it.”

       -Simon Watkins, University of Exeter-

“This year cannot be summarized just in a paragraph; it’s full of emotions, cultures and people. Besides getting professional knowledge it also helped me in personal development. EMC gave me good engineering skills and global overview of mining industry. It was unique experience to live in four different countries and to visit many mining projects in many different cities. It is a program where you meet everyday new people with different backgrounds and different nationalities. It was not just about study but also fun, I enjoyed swimming, playing pool and a Dutch game sjoelen. During the EMC I found all of my colleagues very nice and now they are my friends forever. I would like to thanks all the teachers and EMC staff for their sincere efforts to make this program simply “The best”. Carrier opportunities in the future are also a plus point about the EMC. To be a part of FEMP makes me proud.”

      -Muhammad Qasim Jamal, EMMEP (Pakistan)-

“EMC is a part of my life I never want to miss. Travelling around in Europe, meeting miners of different countries, visiting companies and studying at different locations were among my positive experiences I made.

The master course included a lot of sleepless nights, but not always by studying. Challenges have been set to and solved as a group, which I really enjoyed. My personal highlight of the European Mining Course was the excursion across Finland’s landscapes, which I otherwise would never have seen in  this detail.”

     -Marc Buschkamp – RWTH Aachen-

“I really enjoyed my time at the EMC. Although living and studying together with group of 20 for 9 months 24 hours is not always easy, it’s definitely a lot of fun. I improved my English language skills and met a lot of new people from other cultures and countries.
My highlight for the year was the excursion week in Finland where we visited a lot of interesting companies. I can only recommend this program; where else can you say that you studied at 4 universities within one year?”
